Stalled: what to check before switching routines

4 min read

It is almost never the routine. Five things to check first.

1. How many sessions you actually did

Not what the plan says: what you did. A four-day program you hit twice a week is a badly planned two-day program. Before changing anything, look at your last six weeks of history.

2. Whether anything is still going up

Stalling is rarely total. Usually two lifts are stuck and the rest are moving. If so, the problem belongs to those lifts — technique, setup, accumulated fatigue — not to the program.

3. Whether your sets are hard

Look at the RIR of the last few weeks. A whole plan run at RIR 4 explains any plateau without needing more theory.

4. Food and sleep

Gaining muscle needs at least as much food as you burn, plus sleep. If you have been under-eating for months you are not stalled: you are cutting without having decided to.

5. And if all that is fine: deload

One week at half the sets and slightly less weight. You lose nothing in seven days, and often the weights jump on the way back — what you had was not a lack of stimulus, it was accumulated fatigue.

IN NOVASTRAThe app deletes nothing: set the period to “All” in Progress and you get the volume and relative-strength curve for every month, not just this week.
