Standing Dumbbell Upright Row
Back · Dumbbell · ×2 dumbbells
You hold two: the weight you log is ONE dumbbell's, and volume counts both.
How to do it
A dumbbell in each hand, overhand, slightly closer than shoulder width, resting on your thighs with a tall back. Pull **with the elbows**, which travel ahead of and above your hands, keeping the dumbbells close to your body, up to chest height; lower slowly. With dumbbells your hands can drift apart on the way, which spares the shoulder the forced rotation of the barbell version. **Stop at the chest.** The classic mistake is going to the chin because that is how it used to be taught: that is exactly where it nips.
Variants
The drawing shows one way of doing it, and the technique above describes that one. Almost every exercise has variants — standing or seated, the grip, the bench angle — and is still the same exercise: if you do it another way, write it in the exercise note and you will have it every time you train it.
